Founded in 1991 in the remote area of West Kootenai, Montana, Montana Woodworks has grown to become one of the largest, most trusted manufacturer of rustic furniture in the nation. What is it that makes Montana Woodworks furniture so special? Careful, detailed craftsmanship, high quality wood selection and conscientious construction. Our furniture is assembled using round mortise and tenon joinery - a method proven over hundreds of years to be simple and strong. Our craftsmen dedicate their lives to learning a master craftsmen’s’ skill - passed from generation to generation. In fact, each piece of Montana Woodworks furniture is hand signed by the artisan who made it, signifying its originality, authenticity and integrity.
The Montana Collection is a classic of time and design; featuring skip peeled logs and accent pieces, this line offers a dramatic contrast to the mass produced, machine turned logs so prevalent in the marketplace today. The master craftsmen at Montana Woodworks hand craft each piece with an attentive eye toward creating a one-of-a-kind, heirloom quality item that will last for generations. The items in the Montana Collection are available 'ready to finish' or with a clear lacquer finish.
Homestead Collection
The Homestead Collection features timbers and trim pieces that are square sawn for a rugged look suggestive of the homes and furniture once found on the western frontier of early America. This 'timber' or 'barn wood' style gives the customer the opportunity to own rustic furniture without the look of log furniture. The Homestead Collection is available 'ready to finish', lacquered or with a stain and lacquer finish.
Glacier Country Collection
The Glacier Country Collection features a truly remarkable finish reminiscent of the 'Grand Lodges of the Rockies' circa 1900. First craftsmen remove the outer bark using an old-fashioned draw knife while simultaneously leaving the inner cambium layer for increased texture and contrast. After assembly, each piece is completed in an eight-step professional finish process that applies premium grade stain and clear lacquer for a stunning, low maintenance finish. The result are dark, rich hues and warm tones to provide an extraordinary appearance.
Our logs are harvested in the Kootenai National Forest with Lodge Pole Pine chosen due to its superior strength and because it is generally straighter. Montana Woodworks prohibits the use of heavy equipment in the harvest of our logs as machinery would damage the surface texture of our timber. After harvesting the standing dead timber, the logs are stored until sufficiently dry for use in the building of our furniture. We use the mortise and tenon style joint for maximum strength. For the tenon, or the peg, we use a machine called a 'Log Woofer' which works much like a very large pencil sharpener leaving a tapered end. We carefully sand each piece of furniture before, during, and after the assembly process to smooth the furniture’s surface ensures the highest quality product possible. During the assembly process, we apply a powerful adhesive into the mortise, or the hole, before joining the two pieces. After assembly, the items are again sanded and carefully re-inspected.
