I grab them when I can find them since they’re not made in the US or of this quality anymore. Sometimes you need more than one if you bring more than one hot thing out to the fish house or camping (coffee and soup for example). Also, I would like to gift a couple to my son when he’s old enough.

I completely agree. It’s an amazing product and a shame that it all went away and isn’t what it was anymore. Take care of them and they’ll last a several lifetimes.

zombienudist t1_iy3ab8n wrote
Don’t other people do this? I have 3 pairs of a particular boot I like in my closet that I have never worn. They stopped making the boot in 2000 so I wanted to make sure I had some pairs for when I needed them. They are surplus boots so the cost to do was almost noting and I have enough pairs of my go to boots to last me forever. So I can see buying a few of these, if you like them, and they are not being made anymore. After 30 years i know what I like so no reason not to get some backup of whatever it is you like.

Huge one - N945 12-(B)
Smaller Aladdin - NO. A-1357 Quart Wide Mouth
Aladdin with handle - NO. A-944DH Quart (94)
Lastly a NO. A-943B Pint which is stamped 0117

Bottle brushes work well. I usually fill with boiling water and a little white vinegar and let it sit for 10-15 min and then scrub with a bottle brush and rinse.

Here is the base from my 1969 Stanley Vacuum Bottle. If you look to the left of the logo in the center, you can see the date code stamp. It’s much smaller and less distinct than the other texts. In this case it is 00369, which is 1969.
Crawlerado t1_iy3gq7f wrote
Ah ha! So the big one I have is not marked. Second is 00173, gonna say 1994 for the one with the handle and the last one is actually 00171
So we have unknown, 1973, 1994 and 1971. Way closer than I was!

Psnuggs OP t1_iy3othd wrote
Right!? They have way more plastic too. Plastic isn’t bad when used correctly but it’s usually an indicator of cutting costs. My guess is people weren’t a fan and they had to pivot back to the classic.

In defence of the new ones, I’d say they’re still the most robust thermoses about even if the quality has dropped with the offshoring of production.
I’ve had Thermos, Kambukka and neither hold a candles to modern Stanley in robustness.
Psnuggs OP t1_iy3wnxi wrote
All of these have been tested by me to -30°F (-34°C) ambient with wind and have kept coffee hot for at least 8 hours. In warmer temps and coffee is too hot to drink from morning to night. I put ice water in them in the summer and even at 95°F (35°C) and 70% humidity they still have ice in them after 12 hours. To me that’s flawless.
kelvin_bot t1_iy3wp35 wrote
-30°F is equivalent to -34°C, which is 238K.

There is a lot of anecdotal evidence suggesting that the quality control is lacking and the chances of getting a good one is hit and miss. There is likely survivor bias as well: the US made ones that stopped working got thrown away, so all that’s left are the good ones.
Psnuggs OP t1_iy4s1gg wrote
Keep in mind that these are the older US made versions which appear to be made better and of higher quality materials. From what I’ve read, there’s also charcoal in the walls which make them much more robust. They don’t do this anymore. That’s why new ones are much lighter than the old ones.
Psnuggs OP t1_iy4shb9 wrote
The vinegar kills bacteria and breaks down any coffee stain residue which is why I use it. I rinse mine out and then fill it half full, put the lid on, shake it vigorously, and drain it upside down in my drying rack. Never had a tainted taste. I clean my percolating coffee maker the same way.
