Teen Drivers

I have a 16yo about to start getting their drivers license, but I'm finding the steps at the DMV oddly worded, and it's been about a million years that I went through this in a different part of the country.

Am I reading correctly that you get your drivers permit first, and then take the classes? The wording of the second step insinuates that you need to take the classes to get the permit, but that seems to go against the first step.

Can anyone who has gone through this recently, either as a teen or a parent, set me straight here on what the order is?

i got my permit in 2016, you get your permit first and then take classes

My son just got his license in the past year.

He needed to pass the written test just to get the learners permit, so he had started the classes before going for the permit.

Yes, and permit now replaces the written test. Must hold permit 120 days before you can take the driving portion.

All three of my kids did Next Street. They do a great job.

It's a PITA son got his in the last year.

Take written test to get the permit.

Then take driving school with a min 120 days or just the basic scared straight that parents need to show up and 180 days.

Finally it's the Road test.

They require a permit for certain amount of time , an 8 hour drug and alcohol class . And sufficient behind the wheel training . I was taught by my father they can’t make you send ur kid to drivers school

Your child can do practice tests online for the permit
