Ok I have a model year 2000 vehicle. I just renewed my registration online and the new registration does not expire until 2026. Here’s the issue, I just got a notice to do emissions testing due 1/16. What happens if I don’t do it? I know you need an emissions test to renew a registration but I already renewed it and come 2026 the car will be exempt. It seems I may have to pay a 20$ fee to the dmv but will this come back to bite me or can I just not do it. Not trying to take it to an emissions center and waste my time if I don’t have to

It’s 20$ now and takes all of 10-15mins. If it expires you are still required to do it but they charge a late fee so it’ll be more than 20$ after 1/16

Yeah but if you fail you’re in a world of hurt. It may be worth it to just not do the emissions and then pay the late fee.

I won’t fail but that’s what I’m saying. If I just pay the late fee is it a done deal? My reg is current and come 2026 if I still own the car and renew the car is exempt as it’s over 25 year sold..

I think you have the right idea. A while back I drew the same conclusion. We could be wrong. But the stakes are low. Also, that car can shit the bed between now and when the time to renew comes up and you’ll have saved yourself $20-40 right? WCGW?

Yeah… weird situation. I guess if I have time I’ll get the test done but it seems like I don’t have to 🤷🏻‍♂️

Yeah but it’s required to renew reg right? But my registration was renewed…

You’ll still need to do it regardless. Honestly it never hurts to have an emissions test or an inspection. Bring it to Firestone or economy and do an oil change while you’re there (unless you do it yourself already and save money. If that’s the case good for you). But honestly the only reason to not want to do an emissions test is if you’re hiding something.

Nothing to hide just didn’t want to pull it outta the garage but it looks like I’ll have to

Alright I just got the testing done. Looks like no way to escape it. Thanks for the info and feedback

Long ago you used to be able to just not go and nothing would happen until you went to renew the registration. The wouldn’t let you and you’d have to get new plates and reg and do it all over again. So a lot of people just didn’t go. Especially when you had a shitbox that couldn’t pass. Then dmv started pulling registrations for people and they wouldn’t tell you until you got pulled over for driving an unregistered vehicle. I’m not sure if that’s still happening but if there’s no light on just go and get it done while you know it will pass to save yourself lots of possible headaches
