Out of interest, how do photographers make money exactly if not doing events/weddings? I'd love to travel around and take amazing pictures some day but I can imagine it's incredibly difficult to turn it into a career.

For landscape/nature/wildlife photographers it would be

  • workshops
  • magazine articles
  • books
  • sponsorships/paid reviews on social media
  • YouTube
  • finally some sell some photos

You can also make money with product photography (including real estate), industrial photography for publications of the client company, new born photography or selling photos to news agencies or newspapers.

I believe you are right, it is hard work to make a living.

Must be a bit shitty having to do a lot of those things as well because it's probably not really what they'd actually like to be taking pictures of. Can imagine taking pics of babies gets old real fast.

There is also a lot of administrative work around, writing invoices, calling customers, calling potential customers, doing taxes…

It‘s a business if you want to live from it, as simple as that.
