I like this one.I guess having a goal helps to create a discipline, but does not necessarily mean you’ve to reach that goal.

Reminds me of a short story by Arthur C Clarke. We have heroes because they are the greatest that we can be. Impossible standards that we could never meet, but if we didn’t have them, we would have nothing to aspire to be and to guide us.

Another way to think of this is.

There will one day be a goal you never reach, so try to understand that our search of completion is never ending in nature.

Like fixing up the enclosed garden space you’ve had for a year that’s been overrun by weeds, dead trees, pieces of plastic from a variety of sources, some objectionable matter, and random potatoes and root vegetables buried underneath the soil? Yeah, I guess that makes sense.

I find life lessons are much tastier better when comparing them with pizza.

This is one of the principles we use at my job. Make the goal something hard and aspirational, and then grade yourself/your team after a given amount of time on how close you came.

If you made it easily, try something harder next quarter. If you didn't come close, re-evaluate and make the goal more reasonable next time around.

Some goals are a million-to-one shot, like making a living as a movie star. But at least if a person with that dream gives it their best shot, they can adjust their expectations to act in local theatre productions while holding down a day job, for example.

Like Simon Sinek said create infinite goals. This means create goals that will outlive you like a legacy. There was an mma fighter who had won the title of strongest then after the day he won he fell onto depression. To achieve that title he sacrificed relationships, time with love ones and other type of sacrifices to reach his goal. And after reaching his goal of reaching the peak of that sport he realized that after that he had nothing.

(Sorry for bad grammar not my greatest suit of language) anyways i don't remember much what he said and this was only from my memory so its not that correct. What he meant by infinite goals, this is for example having a child. If you ask every parents what is the hardest thing that they did they will tell you the same thing rasing a child. But if you ask them if it is worth it they will answer the same yes. Have goals that will outlive you.

I've always thought it's best to view goals as targets. It's important to have a target that you're happy with just hitting, because you can't always hit a bullseye.

For example in STEM careers, many would consider astronaut as a bullseye. Of course, that's a nearly impossible goal to attain but around the bullseye are things like engineer, doctor, scientist, etc, and around those are things like pilot, aircraft mechanic, surveyor, etc.

Another example would be goals related to exercise/sports. A bullseye might be the Olympics or Major league athlete. Around this would be Division 1 athlete with full scholarship or Minor league athlete. Around this would be high end amateur or simply being physically healthy.

In all cases, if you set a big goal I think it's important to know you'll be happy with simply hitting the target, otherwise you're just setting yourself up for disappointment. If it's truly an all or nothing situation (maybe professional gamer?) you'd better be sure you enjoy the journey.

I needed this one. Trying to do a marathon this year as part of my New Year’s resolution. Wanted to try to do a marathon in May, but based on where I’m at in training I figured I should just sign up for the half marathon instead. Felt pretty bummed out about not being able to reach that goal, but at least it’s another step in the right direction.
