I have a January work trip in Boston and don't want to drive. I'm thinking of taking the train from Hartford to New Haven, then on to Boston. Looks like a long ride, but I will not be making this trip regularly, so maybe that's not too big a deal.
For those who've done this, how did it go?
For alternates - I see the bus, I don't see another train route. Anything I'm missing?
Taking the bus from Hartford to Boston is much cheaper and faster. That train ride technically works but would be hell to do in my opinion. The Peter Pan buses aren’t very expensive and it will be so much faster.
Trains ARE such a very integral Romantic part of CT AND a safe enjoyable MEANS of travel far superior, classier, refined MEANS of Travel a bus is no comparison . I grew up in WATERBURY and began taking the train into NY as a teen soon I got my license I began driving to Boston. I NEVER took train from CT to Boston BUT TOOK it ALL the way to Montreal.. I am a GIFTED Forensic Investigator Who as young as 18 followed MANY a Fairfield county Exec. On The train INTO Manhattan Good luck and hope you take AWAY some pleasure from your experience.
CT has trains, that’s new to me.
For a one time trip, the train is a bit nicer, but you are going south and then east to eventually go north. The bus will be much quicker. I was in Boston this summer for a golf tournament and had another golf tournament in West Hartford the following day and the only option was the bus, the train would take too long. It was fine, wasn’t too crowded, got to Hartford in about 1 hour 40 minutes
I've done grayhound and Peter pan from Hartford. They usually stop in Worcester for a few minutes. Not a bad ride. Also check Megabus. You can sometimes get really good rates from them.
They drop off at south station or Logan. Then you can take the MTA to anywhere in the city
From Hartford just take Peter Pan. Doing the train loop through New Haven would take forever and be expensive.

How's the switch in New Haven? I see 3.5 hours for Amtrak all the way. That sounds manageable as long as the switch is predictable.
Just don’t take a rush hour bus and you’ll be golden.

The train route you proposed would work, but you are right in that it would be a long ride, and the changeover at New Haven could add some time.
