I would actually suggest using straw in the shelter or dog house or what have you! Blankets can become freezing cold if even a tiny bit of water gets on it like from rain or snow. But straw repels liquid quite well and so will remain warm and toasty for any animal on it! That is why they use them in feral cat shelters.
