Last night I helped an uncle of mine to extract a video from an ISO file and upload it to YouTube for the family to enjoy.

It was from a family gathering we had in 1993. What made it especially special was that it featured people who have sadly passed: our grandmother, a cousin, and an aunt's husband.

Most of the time people didn't know they were being recorded, so what we got was very much a glimpse into the past: people as they were, with zero posturing.

As an adult, I am so very happy to have this recording, because it came at a time where my grandmother's voice was no longer in my head. But in the video, she's very much alive and happy and in her element.

And funnily, in the video people complained about being recorded. Those that complained ended up being the first to appreciate it now.

So, record everything. Even if it annoys people. You'll be delighted you'll have it.

A friend of mine recently passed and I found a few pictures of us when we were kids in the depths of my mom’s Facebook. We were both funny lookin kids and just seemed so happy. The comfort of knowing there was a permanent record of our time together wrapped up in these photos was so helpful in my grieving process. It was like our relationship was immortalised in these photos.

It’s funny because I used to HATE having pictures taken. I would whine, fake smile, etc but as soon as I found these photos, I rang my mom and told her I would never complain about a photo being taken ever again. You just don’t realise how much comfort might come from those immortalised memories in the future!

And most importantly, punch those people who are always like, "put down the phone and enjoy the moment, you're never going to watch this video," and all that other shit they say.
