I've done this and had other friends have this issue, today it happened hence the post. I had a couple cans clinking together and I thought my car was making a weird noise. Went to my dad who's a mechanic and he found the cans. Ever since I've cleaned my car first before going to a mechanic. Helped a friend do the same today and the noise disappeared. Not sure what was tapping and making noise but it stopped once we cleaned out her car.

Took the car to a local mechanic while visiting family. Then, while driving home I've got an intermittent alarm like a doors not shut properly. I've slammed every movable panel. Doors, bonnet, boot, even the fuel cap but it's still going off every now and then during the three hour drive. Next day I degunge the car and find my son's toy police car rolling around the rear footwell that, when rolled under the drivers seat will push down the button and set of the siren!!

I once had 3 of my coworkers on a pickup truck trying to figure out what a loud clunking sound was. The owner said that the truck had been to another shop and they said he needed a transmission replacement. Well my boss tells me to take out the trans to check it but i decided to give it a test drive first. Needless to say there was a 4' iron pipe hitting a couple of paint cans in the back seat.
