I was recently a passenger in car that was pulled over by the police in Maryland (USA.) My 44 year old college educated friend and driver behaved so poorly that I arrogantly wondered if I should try a LPT.
These are a list of things I do when the officer turns their lights on for me to pull over. Perhaps others may find value in some of them. I am not a lawyer or a Law Enforcement officer. Just a guy with a very long commute who has been pulled over at least 30 times in the last thirty years.
- I use the directional signal to alert that I intend to quickly pull over.
- If It is dark, I turn on the dome light so the officer can see inside of the car. I will roll down the windows so the officer can clearly see into the car for his or her safety. If you have dark window tint, you can roll your windows down during the daytime in addition to nighttime.
- I do not reach into the glove compartment or my pocket prior to the officer asking me to produce my license and vehicle registration and insurance. I KEEP MY HANDS ON THE STEERING WHEEL. I will explain "my license is in my back pocket and my other documents are in the glove compartment."
- I address the officer as sir or ma'am. (I understand not everyone feels the need to do so)
- I answer the questions I am asked politely. I do not say "why did you pull me over?"
- If I am speeding I will simply tell the truth. I try to drive no more than ten miles over the limit.
- I have been stopped for texting while driving. I stated I was actually texting. This admission of the truth has resulted in a verbal warning twice.
- I always try to be as professional and polite as possible. Once the officer verifies that the vehicle is mine and I am not wanted or a criminal, I am always released without a ticket. I consider this #winning even if I believed the vehicle stop was nonsensical.
- I do not transport drugs in my car and request that my passengers do the same. I do not drink alcohol. If you are driving with drugs, or are intoxicated, this LPT might not be for you.
