[Research] Scholars Program

Hi everyone.

We recently launched our call for the scholars program, a 8 month full-time entry point into machine learning research to pursue curiosity driven research w access to large scale engineering resources and mentorship. We have intentionally structured the program to be paid and remote-first so we can support talent all across the world.

Our deadline is coming up on November 7th, and as of now, our pool of candidates is still indexing heavily on the US and Canada. In addition to the impressive candidates in these countries, I would welcome any help sharing this opportunity with ML communities around the world.

The Cohere For AI Scholars Program supports the next generation of rising stars as they embark on their research journey by providing an alternative point of entry into NLP research. Scholars will have access to a large-scale experimental framework and work alongside some of the best researchers and engineering expertise in the world. When you mention remote-flexible do you mean that you can work within one of the corresponding countries, or do you mean worldwide? Also, I'm guessing visas aren't supported?

We will support work contracts outside the countries we have offices in -- like we do for our current staff in many countries around the world. For those in countries we have offices in, scholars can of course work out of the offices or participate remotely. No visa support, due to the length of the program. However, we do support visas for many of our other positions -- worth taking a look at the website.

Where can I find Cohere's publications? Basically a way to get an idea of the things you work on.

This is from the blog. Is this criterion strictly enforced. What if someone has publications but no first author publications? What if they have published in lower tier conferences? Why exclude such people, since many of them will be interested in the program.

re: no publications. Our goal is to respect the spirit and intent of the program, we want to support people at the beginning of their research career in machine learning.

So yes, if you published in biology 5 years ago but have no machine learning publications -- you are probably still a good fit for the program. If you have a workshop paper, but don't have any publications, go ahead and apply.

If you have several maintrack papers or multiple workshop papers, I think it is a little less clear you belong to this program. In cases like these where you already have a publication record, we have full time research scientist roles that may be a better fit.

Hmm. About the publication, I'm from hardware background and have developed some ai accelerators one of which has been published, but do not know much about ai itself. I don't know if this program would take that into consideration in the no publications clause.

Often, the skills required to succeed at ML research transfer between different modalities (computer vision, NLP). So, if you have several ML publications one of our research scientist roles is probably a better fit to apply to.

Hardware and ai are still distinct enough subfields that this still adheres to the spirit and intent of the program. My suggestion is to motivate in your application what about this program makes this a sensible next step in your personal goals.
