You have to realize that back then you could buy a house for like 17k. So, $50 was quite a bit. Still not enough but substantial, especially for land in rural Maine. The average cost of an acre was $32 in Franklin county back then.

In this case it was lakefront acreage. Today, lakefront homes sell for 3 times what non lakefront homes sell for. Lakefront acreage is also worth more.

In the 30’s my grandfather was offered half of fort pond in Lancaster Massachusetts for like 10k. He already owned a decent sized chunk plus a 100 acre farm. More land more problems back then.
