You'd think they could be added to the film and you could wear special glasses to see them

You can, I’ve done the glasses at the Regal in Portsmouth NH. I have hearing aides and miss the cc at the theater. I get so much more when I rewatch at home with them on

Every theater has to legally offer captions but most do closed captions such as glasses or a device in your seat.
