This soundtrack is the only physical CD I still listen to because it’s not on any of my streaming services. Pete Yorn, Foo Fighters and Ellis Paul are my favorite tracks.

I only saw the movie once like 20 years ago but they totally nailed this album.

1 Breakout - Foo Fighters
2 Do It Again - Smash Mouth
3 Deep Inside Of You - Third Eye Blind
4 Totalimmortal - The Offspring
5 The World Ain't Slowin' Down - Ellis Paul
6 Any Major Dude Will Tell You - Wilco
7 Only a Fool Would Say That - Ivy
8 Can't Find The Time To Tell You - Hootie And The Blowfish
9 Bodhisattva - The Brian Setzer Orchestra
10 Bad Sneakers - The Push Stars
11 Reelin' in the Years - Marvelous 3
12 Strange Condition - Pete Yorn
13 Barrytown - Ben Folds Five
14 Razor Boy - Billy Goodrum
15 Where He Can Hide - Tom Wolfe

Yeees, bought it a couple of years ago but lost it somewhere. Still one of the best soundtracks out there.

Why is it a bunch of Steely Dan songs performed by others?

Strange Condition is such a wonderful song.

I like AFI's Totalimmortal better than Offspring's cover.

Most of the Farrelly Bros movies had terrific soundtracks. Kingpin is also excellent.

Man I forgot about that movie, the soundtrack really is great tho. I still listen to the Snow Day soundtrack sometimes in my car, I loved that soundtrack as well.

I first saw this film in 2002 when I was newly married with a new baby and exhausted and overwhelmed. My ex husband was upstairs on his computer and eventually had to come downstairs to find out what I was laughing at. It was a couple of hours of total joy at a time I really needed it and I'll love that film forever because of it ❤️

libertinauk t1_iy1e55c wrote

The baby is now 20 years old. He quite liked the film but he preferred There's Something About Mary. He wept laughing when the dog dives out the window 🤣🤣🥰

Also in the film, but not on the soundtrack: Motherfucker by The Dwarves.

The absolute best and iconic scene from that movie is Jim Carrey sliding off the hood of the car

I hate they used the offsprings version of the song considering AFI's original is such a banger.

I find it odd that Cake's song Hem of Your Garment isn't in that tracklist. I know it can be a thing where a song is in a movie but not on the official soundtrack. Besides the fact that I always associate that song with this movie when I hear it, it's such a good ass song.

Go ahead and put the Dumb and Dumber soundtrack in that same group.

That's how Joe Dirt was for me.

There was another post that had a billboard with a guy's forehead and it looked like Jim. Then I see this post. Seems like a weird coincidence.

I’m just here to ask, why isn’t the soundtrack of Ferris Bueller’s Day Off for sale? eg iTunes Store

Also the soundtrack to the Jim Carey film The Cable Guy

I've never had the luck to see them, but I had the All Hallows E.P. CD back in the day. The beauty of this song is as long as you know a few words, you can happily caterwaul along to the rest and it'll sound just fine.

Damn Marvelous 3 are on here? My wife saw Butch Walker here in ATL not too long ago and the other two dudes happened to be attending the show and they played together for the first time in like 20+ years. Crazy to see this track on here.

Edit: also had no idea Offspring covered AFI on this. This really is quite a treasure OP.

I’ve been an AFI fan for a long time. If I remember correct. This cover was played on the radio because it was the offspring. This ended up helping AFI get Days of the Phoenix played on the radio. I could be wrong, it’s been a while, but that’s how I remember it.

6

Blue-cheese-dressing t1_iy2j7b2 wrote

I remember at least one track by Cake in the film, not listed here.

1

Stacular t1_iy2klik wrote

It’s what got me interested in AFI, right before Days of the Phoenix. Circa Black Sails era, I think.

Edit: and because AFI was on Nitro Records at the time, it was a cool move from The Offspring to immediately promote their best signing.

When your source material is Steely Dan, it's hard to go wrong. This soundtrack is just a steely Dan covers album.

One good thing going for them is that the people who love them really love them, myself included, and always try to get others to listen to them.

That said, they still deserve way more attention. People who are really well-informed about older well-regarded music know who they are and hold them in high praise, but they really do deserve to be up there with all those similar bands that manage to be labelled as "cult bands" despite being relatively high-profile.

The studio considered the song selections in that movie "too weird" or "too out there" to put out an actual release. Songs like "Beat City" by the Flowerpot Men, The Dream Academy's instrumental cover of The Smiths' "Please Please Please Let Me Get What I Want", BAD by Big Audio Dynamite, Radio People by Zapp, it was a great list of songs but not considered commercially viable as an official soundtrack.

Man I rinsed this video so hard in my teen years. Defo awakened something inside me.

Have you heard Blaqk Audio? It's their electro side project and they got some bangers.

Monsieur_Moneybags t1_iy3ijit wrote

I think most people who know about them can agree that their first 4 albums—up through Black Sea—were brilliant, but after that opinion is divided. English Settlement (1982) was the start of their "pastoral" change in musical direction, which I wasn't a huge fan of. They still had some good songs here and there from that point on (e.g. "Dear God" from Skylarking), but I don't think on average it matched their earlier quality. I do think their early stuff was better than Talking Heads.

Monsieur_Moneybags t1_iy3iv9p wrote

I still listen to Pete Yorn's debut album. About half of the songs appeared in TV shows and films in the early 2000s. He seemed to be on the brink of breaking into the big time. It's a shame it never happened.

Isn't Motherfucker by the Dwarves in that one too?

1

iCantPauseItsOnline t1_iy40cne wrote

This reason is why I find it strange that people care about movie soundtracks at all. It's a separate piece of art, associated with a movie but not necessarily containing art made for the movie or featured in the movie. For me, that basically relegates soundtracks to a tiny niche interest... which i guess is where we're at, hahah, sorry lol

SpectralHex t1_iy4bj8k wrote

So at first I'm like wtf why would they use the totalimmortal cover?? and then I'm like, oh yeah, the Offspring is like 10 times more popular than AFI 🙃

sterfri99 t1_iy4cf7a wrote

The Dwarves are my guilty pleasure punk band. Are they gross and fucked up? Hell yeah, but they write bangers. “so let’s get high and fuck some sluts” is the best chorus in a song I’ve ever heard

It's definitely an interesting change in musical direction - one that I am a big fan of. I love both ends of the band's history almost equally, tbh. But I think a lot of that is because the first album I heard from them was Apple Venus Pt. 2. Then I kind of floated backwards through their catalogue.

2

Shenanigans99 t1_iy5dgdp wrote

For me they are one of the greats, and it would have been great had they gotten the recognition they deserve.

It's hard to know if things might have worked out differently for them had they been able to overcome some of the difficulties they had to deal with: things like Andy's inability to continue touring, their shitty record deal, and assorted tensions between the group members maybe exacerbated by those things.

Also they've opted not to make the excellent Apple Venus Vol. 1 and Wasp Star available on any streaming service, so that also limits their exposure to only their Virgin albums.

But I love them; they're definitely in my top 5 favorite bands.
