Not necessarily better but for me it's Valerie by The Zutons and Amy Winehouse.
I remember hearing the Amy Winehouse version in the car once with someone else and I mentioned "oh this is a really cool cover." The other person said it's not a cover it's an Amy Winehouse song, to which I replied, "no it's originally done by a band called The Zutons". They had never heard of The Zutons or any song of theirs, but since Amy Winehouse covered this song at possibly peak popularity for her, it became her song to many many people. I knew of The Zutons because I saw them perform on Conan Obrien or some other late show years ago and became a fan instantly. I was surprised when I found out that the majority of people only knew the song Valerie because of Winehouse. I love both versions, but The Zutons is still one of my favorite bands so I'll say I prefer theirs. So, what are some other examples of this? Post links too!
