Tiny logo behind front tire. Banner logo and trim stripe were removed as my husband didnβt like them.

Thats just a Z28. Not an IROC.

The regular Z's had bi-tone paint jobs and different wheels, so it's either an IROC with the door decals removed or they repainted it and put IROC wheels on it.

These were built so poorly, they were falling apart within a few years.

Very true, but they were sooo much fun to drive. The body paneling sucked, especially in New England, but you absolutely could not kill that engine. God damn, they were mechanically superior; even if they would lose parts as you drove down the highway.

No hood grills and no IROC logo. Also, although hard to tell for sure, those look like the 15" rims while the IROC had 16" rims from 85-87. The 16" rims filled the rear wheel well much tighter. This was ok because the suspension was tight enough to not rip out the drum.
Its a regular old Z28 Camaro.
Ornage_crush t1_itonwtp wrote
Its an IROC. Those are absolutely IROC wheels (put 'em side by side with a standard Z28 wheel and they look almost nothing alike).
1986 Z28s were all 2 tone with silver air dam and skirts. As for the hood inserts, they are there but tough to see in the grainy pic.
Source: I'm a former IROC owner (for about 2 weeks).

Paperwork from the dealer & window sticker said IROC Z-28 when he bought it.
SixToesLeftFoot t1_itnzf98 wrote
Then you got fucked. Unless you replaced the hood, removed the IROC stream logo from the door, and made the tires smaller, then they fucked you left, right and upside-down.
mynameisnotsparta OP t1_ito78yv wrote
The wheels are the 16 inch as you can tell by the design. The 15 inch wheels on the Z-28 were a different design.
My husband removed decals the day he brought it home from dealer and due to the glare of the sun on the hood you canβt see the grills / louvers in this photo
Iβm also not aware of any way that one could get an β86 Z28 in monotone. Z-28βs were two-tone from factory.
Part of the "exclusivity" of the IROC-Z was the monotone body-color ground effects.
SixToesLeftFoot t1_itoa0gn wrote
The wheel design does not stand out as IROC exclusive as regular Z28's came with those rims as optional as well.
So your husband paid thousands of dollars more for the IROC, which lets be honest was only purchased by most simply to say they had the IROC, and then immediately removed the logos on a brand new car? Seems reasonable to me for whatever reason he bought it; show or not.
Agree on the lack of two-tone rocker panels, but as another user later pointed out was that the lightwells are black on the IROC, and these are clearly red. Maybe while he was removing the door logos off the new paint, he decided to reshoot the front valence? Also seems reasonable to me.
As for the angle of the sun reflection? Meh. There would be less of a reflection off the louvres so it would probably stand out a bit more. Maybe the sun was just right with the angle of reflection.
I'm not saying all that didn't happen, but nothing aside from the lack of two-tone paint points this to an 86 IROC. Don't get me wrong its a fun car to drive and I personally had several over the years, but this just seemed off.
EDIT: I stand corrected. Just pulled up the specs and there were rare models that came off the line with color matched lightwells. Not that it matters in this case because you have already unequivocally stated that "They are actually black", but yes, they could have been color matched to red.

The IROC in 1986 had the logo in big letters on the door and the light wells were black. The hood scoops would also be black. This is likely a Z-28. This car is strangely hard to place because solid rockers that match the rest of the body without a striped sticker running between is the look of 89. Thatβs the year I would have guessed.
Still, a fun ride back in the day.

Logo was removed by my husband the day he picked it up from dealer Light wells are black and hood scoops are there but the sun glare is making both t difficult / impossible to see. The trim line was removed as well. Itβs an β86 IROC Z was monotone & the z28 was two-tone from factory.

My first car was the 1987 Trans Am Smokey and Bandit tribute black n gold. I loved driving that car. A few years later I bought an older 1978 White Firebird with T-tops I'd accidentally leave off over night and of course it would rain. I was like 21. I wish I had kept them both.
