Well, I’ve lived in Berks, Lebanon, and Lehigh so we can cross those off the list.
Washington sucks. Crawford is best!
I’ve lived in Wayne, Luzerne, Center, Montgomery and Allegheny and spent a lot of time in both Lackawanna and Washington counties and there’s just nothing like the 412.
NEPA sucked. It felt like it was always 10 years behind the times and its glory days were all about coal. People showed no motivation to be more than what they were and many of us left when we came of age. State College was an oasis in a sea of similar backwardness with the locals looking down on the students who basically put their area on the map. The Philly suburbs were self service toxicity with too many people and most didn’t even look at those around them as they went about their business.
The Pittsburgh area OTOH has seemed like the complete package. Yes, it’s a rust belt town like Bethlehem and Nazareth in the eastern part of the state or Youngstown to the northwest but it aspires to be more with its universities, many different neighborhoods that are more complete than any town anywhere else in the Commonwealth and burgeoning technology industry. Even the North Side (despite its bad rap) has a certain “Mister Rodger’s Neighborhood” charm - at least during the daylight hours.
Luzerne really bums me out so bad. It’s got so much potential and there is glimmers of improvement in some spots, but the population is so god damn cynical and wants nothing to improve or change, and then go and complain how nobody wants to touch the area.
You know it's bad when Pittsburgh is considered an upgrade. TBH NEPA was always considered to be that part of the state where people either lived there their whole lives and bitched about the mines shutting down or moved in because it was more affordable than the Philly suburbs or north Jersey. I can remember as early as age 14 I couldn't wait to GTFO and at least make it to the Lehigh Valley or King of Prussia.
I want out so bad you won’t believe it. The fact that almost every relative of mine that moved out of the area came crawling back makes it feel almost hopeless but the at this point I’m tempted to start sending job applications down south or out of state and hope for the best.
I can imagine. I left 30 years ago and hopped all around the state. Have you considered Pittsburgh or the Lehigh Valley? The rust belt towns seem to be shifting toward high tech.
Yeah they were where I was initially shooting for when job hunting out of college but student loan payments were starting to creep up on me so I had to settle for a fairly shitty help-desk job just shy of Hazleton. So they’ll probably be my main targets when I jump back in to the job hunt.
That county is WVa lite.
Why? (Like, I'm genuinely asking.)
My parents (both born & raised there) couldn't wait to leave. I've been there plenty of times (spent weeks there every summer) and... yeah...
bc it cool
Okay, what makes it cool?
King County jk. York I guess
