Pete is a cat and originally starred with Mickey, later Goofy.

But is he referred to as a friend? I thought he was more the villain in the Mickey stories.

In Mickey Mouse Clubhouse which is aimed at preschoolers, he is largely a friendly character. So yes originally a villain, but people change.
