I don't think ppl who say they dislike Tik Tok or social media " influencers" usually mean food critic or any other kind of actual reviewer. I feel there's a very specific type of person that is meant, although I'm not sure how to define it.

I’ve worked with many over the years and been around big programs that agencies do, they are far from undeniable. It can be very powerful but more often than not it does not have that effect or anywhere near it. Most audiences from “influencers” that approach you will be faked/bought (as will the engagement). And you are approached a lot. It got to the point where I heard from about 2-3 a day. One way to help filter through the bullshit is to look at their other channels, that tells you whether they’re truly an influencer or someone whose account maybe got lucky from a handful of pics. The way algorithms work, they may have one or two random posts that took off but the rest have almost no engagement. If a brand wants to work with them I recommend looking for good content that you can promote to your target audience instead of relying on their audience, the algorithm may show it to people that are not someone that would become a customer. Also, big pet peeve, hiring an “influencer” that is in an industry you are not. For example a fashion influencer for food or travel. Those posts just don’t fit with their content and it stands out as an ad. Travel “influencers” that share duck faces and you can’t even see the destination? Nails on a chalk board.

Eh, If you browse r/choosingbeggars you’ll see a lot of influencers ask for free stuff in return of exposure. Not surprised the critic asked for money. Although asking for thousands is ridiculous but I wouldn’t know what to charge if I was in that position.

Yeah, i can see it both ways if you are an actually popular critic/influencer. People like Mr. Beast can probably completely make a restaurant considering how much Beast Burgers sell in a month. I can see them charging money just because they know its a big deal and they don't want to be taken advantage of by the owner.

Fuck the small guys trying to get free shit for clout though. Its always with an implicit threat that they'll eat your restaurant anyways but shit on it, kinda like a Mob protection racket

That is why I think he has a good following.

He seems to give honest reviews.

If he was wrong or lying on how stuff tasted just for money... people wouldn't follow.

He gave a restaurant in Florida a pretty bad review. But also admitted he liked the wings with lemon and hot sauce.

Also, he purchases his own food somewhat anon.

I think it is kinda like diners drive ins and dives.. but for tktoc

Yeah, the other food critic apparently asked for $2,600 (and probably expected free food), which is really shitty. The business said they weren't sure if they could pay rent and someone seriously thought to charge them that much money.

A hostel I heard about was given a bad review that the owner didn’t know about. Someone said the whole place smelled of marijuana. The next day the owner was surprised the place was full. Then he learned about the review.

I love his reviews. Always feels honest and down to earth with everything he says. I also like that he goes in trying not to tell them he is going to review since that can change what happens. Biggest thing for me though was when he reviewed the tik tok pickle lady and found out she wasn’t certified to sell them and immediately called it out and said to cancel your order and not eat if you already received it. Taking full accountability for not doing his research into it.

Wow a food critic that doesn’t charge, that’s rare as hell now a days when they have a following. Most of them charge and most of the time they’re not honest reviews anymore but paid advertising. Have gone to many around LA just to be disappointed.

I follow a couple local social media food people partially so I know where not to go. Places always end up totally slammed which good for them but I have to wait a couple weeks. I’ve had multiple local favorites where it became a “not today” after things got posted.
