TL;DR If you’ve had new floors installed in a room, can you tell me approximately how much it cost?

I’ll obviously be getting an actual quote from a contractor, but does anyone have recent experience with putting a new floor in one room of around 500 square feet? The current floor is just bare concrete, which used to have carpet. I’m thinking of either hardwood or some variation of that, but have absolutely zero clue how much this would be (no experience with house renovations or builds). And every site where you can get a supposed “quote” online forces you to complete a marketing form. I would just like to know a general ballpark before I venture into this project, without giving my contact info to a company yet.

You can look at sites like lumber liquidators and find the material you want to use and they have a calculator . That at least will give you a ballpark for the materials. 500 sf is not huge and could be done in 1 day if you are handy with a chop saw.

I did a floating floor from Lumber liquidators. Super easy install myself. Maybe ~1400 for all materials for my downstairs, minus the kitchen. I went slightly north or middle of the road.

I had about 500sf of subfloor and 3/4” nail down white oak installed on top of old hardwood flooring for about $7500, including plumbing, demo, leveling, baseboards, etc. required to complete the job. This was earlier this year.

So for installing over concrete you’ll need to have a vapor barrier and 3/4” OSB installed over top. Figure around $1.50/sqft in materials, if you buy them at Home Depot.

Subfloor install might be around $500 or around $1/sqft Hardwood floor install probably would be $1000-$1500, around $2-$3/sqft, so maybe $1500-$2000 for install.

Assuming $5/sqft for the flooring, plus subfloor you’re at around $3250 in materials.

I would try to get a labor only quote, reimburse them for subfloor expenses and source the flooring yourself to avoid getting a markup on the materials.
