I read quite a bit, and don't really have a specific author or genre I follow. I like historical fiction, mysteries, feel-good novels, pretty much everything besides sci-fi and fantasy. I've noticed some phrases / words seem to be used in almost everything I read but are not words you hear in real life. I was wondering who else has noticed something like this.
My overused phrases:
- "she murmured" - women always murmur in fiction. I never heard anyone in real life say that someone murmured, and it seems like such a silly word.
- "a shock of red/blonde hair" - kids seem to often have shocks of hair. Another term I hate and yet see in so many fiction books.
Anyone else have words or terms they feel are overused?
