I'm a slow reader

I finished reading the hobbit in one month. I only read for one hour in a day. And i read aloud since I can't absorb what I'm reading when just reading it silently. Is this normal? If not any tips on how to read faster while also able to understand what I'm reading. I will appreciate any help or comment.

Edit: Another reason I read aloud is so that i can pactice speaking. I don't really talk alot, and there are days I don't talk at all.
