As many others have commented before, this book is dark and weird. However, I thought the pacing and story organization were poor.

The reader is thrown into the story with little information, and it doesn’t help that the book jumps back and forth in time frequently. Many of the characters, ideas, and events in the book are loosely based on various religions and mythologies, but with no overarching rules/structure to the universe. Anything can happen, and the author uses that lack of tethering as a crutch to save the main characters, drive the story, and toss uniquely dark and bizarre scenarios at the reader. To me it felt like a 10 year old telling a story. A deeply disturbed and sociopathic 10 year old that reveled in attempting to shock his audience. Anything that didn’t seem to make sense was verbally dismissed by one of the character, rather than finding a way to rationalize it within the bounds of the book’s universe.

At times the book was unintentionally comical due to the author’s lack of competency with: religion, anatomy, politics, gravity, firearm operation, animal and human behavior to name a few. I found it difficult to become immersed in the book as the story accrued more plot holes, unrealistic human interacts, and literal deus ex machina instances.

It was also obvious that the novel was pared down in size and scope from a larger original draft due to the disjointed nature of the story and numerous components/entities that were mentioned and forgotten along the way, never to be resolved or explained.

Overall, I think I would have greatly enjoyed the book if someone else had written it. I know my opinion is in the minority and that this review will anger many that loved the book, but I honestly got so frustrated with the author that as I read I began compiling a list of all my grievances.
