i’ve recently decided that i really want start reading again like a did as a kid. in creating a TBR list, i’ve been trying to decide if i would rather buy a book as it comes time to read it, or rent it from the library instead.
had i made the decision to begin reading again a while ago, i would’ve easily said renting is the better option. but i’ve also discovered annotating, and i think it’s a great way to keep myself focused on the book and it’s been really fun so far and helps me not get distracted so easily. but i obviously can’t underline or place sticky tabs in a library book.
i love owning my own copy and having the freedom to do whatever with it, but i’m also not fond of how expensive they can be to buy, even if it is spread out over a long period of time. i’m also worried about buying a book and then hating it lol.
so, how do you decide whether to buy or rent a book? do you have a system or do you just go with your gut? for those of you who annotate, how do you pick books from your TBR to buy?
EDIT: by renting i meant BORROWING. sorry for the confusion. there is no money involved with my local libraries

I really hope you mean borrow. I've never had to pay to take books out of a library.
I much prefer to buy. My wife and I are building a home library. When she moved in with me after the wedding she brought 15 bankers boxes of books with her. Even if we buy a book and don't like it somebody else probably will, so onto the shelf it goes.
