Oh man, messed up on the logos;

  • England: that’s The FA logo, not the football team. It should say “England” at the top and have a star
  • France: Should have 2 stars on top

These are the FA logos, indeed. I believe it is rarely that national team has it's own logo, besides FA logo. Stars are like an extra, sometimes are there sometimes are not.

Edit: I was using logo pack for FAs. Now as you pointed this out, I went on wiki to check. Among 16 teams in the bracket, exactly 2 of them have different logos compared to the FA logos: England and France. I overlooked this, as this is definitely not a standard. I follow football for a long time, and I was convinced FA logos are "the logos".

I guess I could correct it for the next version, but I don't see it like a big deal.

Anyway, thanks for the heads up.

I was in Split on holiday once and we visited the Hajuk Split team's stadium. The fans' passion is amazing, they love the opportunities to play, win or lose. There were framed newspaper cuttings of when they played Arsenal and lost heavily, for example.

Better, but I think flags + country name would be best. I'm a bit sketchy on my South American flags so I couldn't actually work out who played who.

But love the circle format too, never thought to use this for a knockout comp.

Really cool way of representing the info.

My only constructive criticism is you should have made the divider lines a bit thinner. They draw way too much attention to themselves, and there is very little room to expand the symbols because of it.

I wonder how that relates to illusions, if you didn't just bring that up to say it's intuitive either way. The reason I brought up programming is that in the process of codifying problems, we have to break them down in our heads, and there they can often look like graphs - which is what this is. So I thought it could be that other people aren't as used to graphs as I am.

I don't, because flag design kinda ruins the clarity of the graphic. E.g. France's segment looks like three different blocks at a glance. This one is the same format but more readable.

Edit - the top comment reply to that post is the most readable and best looking version of this

>Then you have Uruguay counting their two Olympic wins as stars.

Yeah it's kind of dumb but you're missing a huge part, those are the 1924 and 1928 wins, the first WC was played in 1930 (bc they weren't going to include football as a sport in LA 1932).

Those 2 Olympic golds were won by the Uruguayan senior team vs other World class teams, as opposed to what we have now were the Olympics are mostly a U-23 tournament

Six shots on target in three matches and oft-shaky performances from the keeper is hard to say Canada did well. That said, there were some close moments in the Morocco match. Topping the group in CONCACAF, I expected more from them.

fanwan76 t1_izs81f8 wrote

I'm not a fan of football, but using team logos instead of country names makes this pretty hard to follow for a casual viewer.

Also repeating colors for different teams is confusing and doesn't really help with team recognition.

It also doesn't show the match scores which sports brackets usually do.

And it doesn't provide any information about the teams rank coming into the tournament, which again brackets usually do.

This format would look cool printed on a tee-shirt at the end of the tournament. But personally I don't see it as a good reference during the competition.

This works once you enter this stage, but would be a bad way to represent a tournament. The cognitive load to understand who played who in the first round is much higher than the typical tree diagram with clear spacing between the matchups. Visualization of data is about understanding first

Oh sorry I gave benefit of the doubt and figured you weren’t just being obnoxious.

Since you apparently don’t know what an estimate is, here are general explanations for that estimate

The 6,500 figure actually refers to all deaths of migrant workers from Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Nepal, India, and Bangladesh, regardless of cause… There is clear evidence of thousands of migrant worker deaths in the lead-up to the World Cup,” said Human Rights Watch’s Michael Page

It’s extremely easy to find sources other than the guardian for an insight into this but you sound more interested in swatting people down than correcting or getting good info.

In total ~15,000 non nationals died overall as a general stat, but it’s hard to argue that the working age immigrants mostly died of heart attacks.

Qatar’s official response, if you want to go with that, was 37, then 400-500, then 37. Now you have the full range of estimates, maybe try to provide one of your own next time.
