By rank with the top tank at the bottom right. Rank goes by the total population within the circle where larger count is ranked higher.

It is about population density. In the US most colleges have school colors related to sports. They are also grouped into conferences and divisions because of sports. Football is related to population density because you need a lot of fans and a lot of land.

#182 (UMich) and #166 (EMU) are less than ten miles apart. The vast majority of Michigan’s circle is included in EMU’s but is shifted slightly west from the population centers of Detroit. I found that interesting.

I’m not sure about this. Northeastern seems like it should he ahead of BU as it is actually more downtown and near the high density areas. Especially with growth in Boston towards more downtown

Shouldn't the location used for a school be where their campus is? The University of Connecticut (#118 on the chart) campus is in Storrs, CT. The chart seems to be using East Hartford as their location. UConn plays their home football games at Rentschler Field in East Hartford, which is 20 miles away from campus. They play half of their home basketball games in Hartford at the Civic Center.

Bethune-Cookman seems wrong... They are located in Daytona Beach in Volusia County not Levy County. Daytona is not very high density but it's plenty dense to not be last on this list.

Having earned countless doctorate degrees from a number of these prestigious institutions my ivory tower inclination is to retort “Sir you are mistaken!” for no matter your intellectual persuasion I think you’ll agree THEE San Diego State University is not located in South Central LA’s Carson, but, in fact, the fair city of… wait for it… San Diego.

Somewhat. Division 1 is the largest grouping of schools, and population density is measured.
