But a bad snickerdoodle is soul crushing.

Nothing worse than getting excited, but the second you pick it up you can tell it’s rock hard. That level of disappointment is hard to match.

Nope. Snickerdoodles have cream of tartar in them. Normal sugar cookies dont

SixOnTheBeach t1_ityrg4x wrote

That's not necessarily true. They often do, but a snickerdoodle doesn't have to have cream of tartar by definition to be a snickerdoodle.

Anything with "baking powder" technically has cream of tartar in it. Baking powder is a 1:2 ratio of baking soda to cream of tartar.

Edit: this isn't always true apparently. Baking Powder is an acid and a base. One of the acids commonly used is Cream of Tartar but others are used too. My Great Value baking powder uses Monocalcium phosphate for the acid.

tartar sauce in a cookie ??

In case you aren’t joking, no. Cream of tarter is an acid that you can add to baked goods that don’t have any other acids in them to react with the baking soda and give you some rise in your dough. Of course you can also just use baking powder which already contains an acid for the reaction.

oh thank you for this explenation , didn't know about it. For me Tartar is a sauce that fits great with fish or in the name steak tartar

Hard disagree. Snickerdoodles have a somewhat creamy texture compared to your average sugar cookie.

As the often hated oatmeal raisin fan and a snickerdoodle lover I will defend this hill with you.

Oatmeal raisin is still king for me. But I won't fault anyone for picking SDs

natek11 t1_itzblvj wrote

I like to make them with chocolate covered raisins. Best of both worlds.

I've started replacing the raisins with chocolate chips. Even though I like oatmeal raisin, oatmeal chocolate is... better.

The college I went to had the best oatmeal raisin cookies, they were the size of you hand held open with the fingers out, and were a meal in themselves. Often one of those with coffee were the best breakfast while studying in the building where that food kiosk was. Been a fan of that cookie ever since!

I tried using oatmeal cookies for breakfast as a gateway to eating granola… granola still sucks.

Cookies are my weakness. Idgaf what kind of cookie it is. But snickerdoodles will always reign supreme in my eyes. They hold a special place in my heart no other cookie can. My grandma was a cafeteria worker in the 90s when I was growing up and she would always bring home snickerdoodles for all the grandkids when we were at her house. Maybe that's why I love them so much.

Not as superior as acquiring the infamous Cinnabon cinnamon to make Snickerdoodle. I would die on THAT hill just to attain the luscious spice that rules my life. I must attain the spice.

I good sinickerdoodle with a perfect cinnamon sugar ratio a slight crisp on the outside and chewy in the middle is a damn fine cookie.

I will join you on that hill, good stranger.

Snickerdoodles are fantastic and supreme in the soft comforting cookie category, but they're a little too simple to be the best all-arounder.

Y'all need to try chunky chocolate raisin walnut oatmeal cookies. Head and shoulders above all others.
