Hi Reddit game people,

I used to play a game which was already old when I discovered it about 15 years ago. It was a fantasy game and my character would be exploring caves and gaining XPs and equipment while fighting dangers like slimes and my worst ever- spiders. I can't remember much more than that it had extensive maps especially the cave systems, and it was relatively slow going because I am not a very good gamer but it could soak up hours having fun trying to run around those caves and collect gems.

I am sorry I can't describe it better. I think the title of the game was the Something of Something, e.g. The Caves of Avenor or some such. I haven't had any luck using Google, any help is appreciated.

Thank you!

EDIT: Found it! My brain finally coughed up the name "Avernum". Thanks a lot for the suggestions, they jiggled some memories loose πŸ™‚

Okay... I can think of several games off-hand that fit those criteria. Was it for Windows, DOS, or something else? Did it use ASCII art or have actual graphics?

For some reason I’m guessing it’s the game called Fate, slimes and spiders were both common enemies and it came free on a lot of PCs back in the day

Fate is in the right direction but the graphis are too sophisticated for the gane I remember. This game was really basic in how one moved though the sound was nice. You could hear water dripping in the caves with a nice ploink, and the character made a sound moving like boots on cobblestones except quite fast.
