Just an FYI, lens flares always intersect the exact center of photo.

Out of interest, would a lens flare still happen with the sun portrayed where it is?

Sure. It would be straight up. You'll at least see a little mirror image of the sun as a bright spot, even when using a lens with good anti glare coatings.
