To monitor the audio. Monitoring. They use them to monitor.

They want to ensure that what they're saying is being picked up and recorded and sounds how they want it to sound.

To monitor the audio in real time. This is why zero latency monitoring is something brought up fairly often in audio interface reviews and something a lot of podcasters and whatnot tend to (rightly) care about.

They need to be checking constantly if the audio is on and if the levels are OK. They often push a mute button when their mom calls and then forget that they're muted, so instead of making a silent stream, they can hear their voice missing and fix it. They're live mixing stuff like music, game sound, their own voice and other sound effects, so they need to make sure that they're all at the right volume.

Basically headphones are the same thing like looking at the screen. That's why we call them monitors. You can't use speakers for that because the microphone picks them and it makes feedback.

If you want to stream but don't want to have big headphones, you can still use in ear monitors like musicians do on stage.

Yeah, some people take the risk. Their streams crap out often though. they rely on the chat telling them that something is not right. There are also some that have a second person handling this and other stuff like chat moderation. They also often look at the controls to see if everything is OK.

So they can hear whether the microphone is recording their voice properly.

They listen to what's being recorded by the mic in real time, as opposed to after the fact with computer playback. It's there as a measure to help them record better audio because they'll pickup that something is wrong while recording instead of after the fact when listening back to the audio after recording an hour of unusable audio because whatever audio is being created by the mic will be heard in the headphones as they are recording.

Got it thank you. But a lot of creators still doesn't use it, why?

1. Could be that they're willing to take the risk.
2. Could be unaware that the mic or interface is even capable of doing that.
3. Larger content creators could also have sound guys keeping an eye on things behind the scenes, thus negating the need to monitor it personally.
