I bought a otterbox cover for my new iPhone 14. When I rode my bike yesterday I bump into a hole in the rode, the iPhone fell from the bag he was in. All the back of the iPhone is broken but “luckily” the otterbox cover doesn’t have a scratch. Think about it next time you think what will defend your iPhone.
This seems to be becoming a very common occurrence with iPhone 14 pro model. That camera bump is insane and causes problems
It's just a case. They're meant to protect from minor every day impacts. If you want something that can protect your phone from something as extreme as falling off a bag while riding a bike you're gonna need a really big really thick case with a bunch of shock absorption. If OP was riding a bike that phone was moving pretty fast when it fell and was fairly high up. All that energy has to go somewhere and some plastic with a bit of air is only capable of doing so much.
When I used to ride bikes I had my old Galaxy nearly snap in half when I crashed one time.
I emailed them about this and they told me they don’t responsible for the iPhone damage so I told them to shove the case up and wish them to bankrupt
The funny thing is that my old iPhone 8 had a AliExpress 4$ cover and although all the falling still looks brand new
When I bought it there wasn’t a plan in my country and I forgot so no.. no apple care and the iPhone 3 month old 🤦♂️🤦♂️
Fuck otter box, I tried to file a claim on my iPod touch back in the day in the life proof case with the metal hinge. Here’s the kicker I dropped it on the carpet, the whole screen shattered and the point of failure was the latch. Same response as you. Mous makes really good cases highly recommended them.
To add insult to injury even with AppleCare+ he might have to buy a whole new iPhone because the back housing isn’t replaceable.

You may be able to do a chat/call with apple support in your country to have them add the apple care. When you do it online/over the phone they just run diagnostics to verify internally everything else is working. In the US, you have 1 year from the date of purchase to add apple care, also i think you have 60, maybe 90 days to do it yourself in setting > general > about. However they may ask is there physical damage to the exterior, so you may need to lie about that…

(BTW I totally feel for the OP, I had similar happen to me when my phone fell when I was on the motorbike - only my camera shattered and thankfully, I had AppleCare+ - but in today’s society it is a problem with the phone that it can not survive a simple fall from a travelling motorcycle onto concrete!)

(US) After 60 days you need to take it in person. The option to buy in the os is gone after 60. If that doesn’t work, If it’s just the back glass I’d just take it to a repair shop personally. You would save some money vs OOW with Apple
Right, and they can still contact apple support via chat or call to add apple care if they are within 1 year in the US. In this case the phone must be functional and connect to either a WiFi network or a cellular plan so they (apple) can run basic diagnostics. This is an option as there are not apple stores in a handful of US states and territories. My best guess is that they do ask the consumer if there is physical damage & it’s up to the consumer to either be truthful or lie. Im sure lying somehow breaks the TOC for applecare+ if apple were to find out.

Iv been using the aluminium and rubber framed Gorilla case since I cracked my iPhone 5 screen. Replaced a few cases (shame you can’t buy just the glass) but my iPhones 6s+ 8s+ 11pro max and 13 pro max have fallen off the roof, out my pocket on my quad, (you really don’t want to see your new phone bounce past you as brake hard) down stairs, out of cars, off tables and
fallen in toilets, puddles and ponds with no damage. Not the prettiest way of displaying your phone but it’s more about function over form

I have the gold 14 pro and the otterbox non-mag safe version, I drop my phone often and it’s never cracked anything
That’s why me personally, I only go for the OtterBox defender series. I’ve never had an issue with any of those. Yes they’re a bit more bulkier but at the same time I don’t have to worry about any accidental cracks.

Sadly cracked glass on the back of any iPhone (with the exception of non-pro 14s) need either a rear system replacement or full unit replacement to be fixed and those aren’t cheap…

Well I had a case like 5 years ago made incipio that if you dropped your phone and it was internally damaged somehow they would pay for a replacement at a caveat of like a 50 claim For my lg g6. Call it anecdotal I just don’t want to waste my time with someone who’s clearly biased towards otterbox.
My friend has an iPhone 8 and he’s broken it the same exact way while using the heaviest duty otter box case and every time it’s from internal shock to the display because of the case design, 4 times in fact. I told him he should sue because it’s guaranteed up to 12 feet and it’s also because of the case that’s it’s breaking. I have the same phone and I use a off brand case and definitely dropped it more and from higher than he has. Otter box is a scam and they put clear failure points in the their products and take no accountability for it. Period!
Clearly biased towards Otterbox? I’ve literally never owned an Otterbox case. I always go slim. My phone is currently in a Spigen Rugged Armor (which despite the name is fairly minimal). I also have several leather cases that have very minimal drop protection. They’re there for minor oopses.. not ultimate protection.
And again, you seem to think that case manufacturers are going to pay out $600-1000 on a phone for a $30 case. That isn’t going to happen.
Thankfully with some of the latest iPhone 14 lineup, the back glass is replaceable by itself again

While I agree it’s illogical they should at least pay for a full refund of the case plus something towards the damages if it’s scene that the case was at fault for damage in cases like this.

I had one from apple and I am convinced it did the same due to the hard plastic lip around the cameras. I bought a d-brand one - exy but bullet proof.
Oh shit. This is my biggest fear. I use a Rhinoshield bumper for ages and my phone falls out of my pocket on the tile floor all the time… I heavily rely on the thin lining of impact absorbing rubber in the case to have that not happening…
I have that exact same case, it’s protected me so many times. It’s not the cases fault, you dropped it from a moving vehicle.

the otterbox case is plastic so it doesn’t break, also get something to hold your phone in your bike, it also happened once to me and i have the same case but it didn’t break

Everyone please… Camera lens protectors go a long way especially with the 14 Pro Max. Massive design flaw for them to keep the cameras unprotected. They should have raised the metal lip around each lens. As for the back glass… ye. Glass is Glass and Glass breaks unfortunately
A tech at my local apple authorized repair shop told me the 14pros can actually swap out the back glass now. Not sure how true this is however seeing as it’s his job I believe him.
Yeah I just did a little research and apparently repair shops have some new tech that’ll laser the back adhesives off through the glass and it’ll just pull off like it was never attached. Really bringing down final costs.
Go to an Apple Store and tell them to inspect it. You’ll have to repair the back or anything else that’s damaged for the full price, and then they’ll let you add apple care.
Yes, but they need to physically inspect it in a store after 60 days. Not a OTA diagnosis. An actual physical inspection to check for any damage.
I think just the regular 14 this year, not the pros yet.
