It really wasn’t bad before the pandemic when they enforced the lights. You just had to wait for the signal.

Now it’s even difficult to cross in a car because the lights around rush hours are absolutely meaningless. They’ll honk at you for trying to cross when you’ve got the light. There’s times where not a single vehicle can cross during a green light.

The removal of the barrier between the lanes also made it worse IMHO. Hopefully post construction that comes back.

Just keep repeating "I am with the force, and the force is with me" while crossing and you should do fine.

Go down coles St you will go under the highway, and you’ll see some cool murals while you’re there.

Sidewalk is shitty atm, but allegedly per City Council Solomon it will be fixed

You can walk down 13th St from Staples to get to Home Depot without having to cross tunnel traffic.

Cross at the light like a normal person. If you're particularly scared, hit the signal button to cross, which will actually make the walk sign longer and give you a "walk" sign, whereas if you just wait for the light, it won't switch off from "don't walk" and the light will be shorter.

Also, you can cross on the side away from turning traffic - west side of the 12th St intersection, east side of 14th.

Hit the Cross button, then wait for the light and the traffic to stop moving?

This maybe doesn't help you in the short-term, but FYI, 12th and 14th are controlled by the Port Authority, and the Port Authority appears to have set the traffic light timings to be the average walking speed of an adult, which is obviously very hostile to pedestrians. Seven lanes is also four too many lanes now that toll collection is all electronic now. The Holland Tunnel is only two lanes. They should cone off the extra lanes in the short-term and redesign 12th and 14th St in the long-term.

Cross on the side of street where traffic can't turn.

For example, if you're on Grove Street and you wanna cross 12th, go between the Buy Rite and the Gulf Station.

Yeah I was going to say the same thing. I cross 12th/14th most weekdays so I purposely cross on the side where cars stop (so in your example the west side of Grove St when crossing 12th St).

Even then it's not perfect, on rush hour days when NJ drivers can't figure out how to stop their car behind the light pedestrians still end up playing real life frogger just to cross. In those cases I just walk in the middle of the street & try to keep myself visible in the sea of traffic. Usually the north/south bound cars can't move much anyway since they're being blocked by other cars.

The other thing I do is always cross in front of cars, never behind them. Better chance that drivers at least see you in front of them. Too many idiots will randomly start backing up when they stopped their car past the light & don't look for pedestrians behind them.

Honesty annoying as hell to walk to that home depot. I make an effort to go to the location at 23rd st in manhattan or hitch a ride to the 440 one.

Cross on the West side of Manilla, rather than the East, so that cars aren't turning into you as you cross with the light.

Robin.

Literally just crossed and did exactly this (both ways). 100% the right answer. It's still not "great" but it is pretty okay. Felt comfortable doing it with my child.

Grab an Uber across.

Jokes aside, I hate crossing there and usually go the round about way under the highway. Takes longer but it’s easier on my stress levels, especially when I’m with the misses and worrying about two people getting hit by JC drivers instead of just one

I might believe the complete lie that JCPD is understaffed if I literally ever saw them doing anything besides sitting in a squad car or "monitoring" a hole in the ground while they stare at their phones.
