Hello! I just moved here from Brooklyn to Journal Square. I need to know where are areas I need to stay away from lol high crime ain't my thing. I use to live on a block with shootings and stabbings every other weekend and not about that life any more.

Journal square seems decent, just homeless people and a lot of hustle and bustle, wish there we're more bars/ places to eat that aren't Indian lol

I am not from around here must of went over some heads. I would like recommendations on other foods like hidden gems around here, the last sentence about Indian food is not a complaint notice the ( lol ). Geez man, calm down XD

First off, you can't move to Little India and complain about the Indian restaurants. Which are great, btw.

Second, crime's not terrible anywhere, but the rule of thumb is, the closer you are to either river, the safer it gets. Greenville, the southernmost neighborhood in JC, is the poorest and therefore the least safe, but like the rest of JC, it's getting gentrified pretty quickly.

Crime happens anywhere there is an opportunity for it to happen. You came from Brooklyn, you know the signs to look out for.

If you walk a few more blocks in any direction you will find different food.

Stay away from MLK, Ocean, and Bergen Ave's. Everywhere else is ok. Downtown and the Heights are pretty safe. Journal SQ is decent but i wouldn't walk by myself at 2 am.

edit* when I said Bergen, I meant the part of that street that is parallel with MLK and Ocean.

I dunno about "ungodly hours" but I walk alone at night on Bergen from JSQ too (all the way to McGinley Sq) and I don't feel unsafe. It's like any other big city at night- I keep my wits about me just like I did when I lived in Brooklyn. Also I don't feel any significant difference between walking on Bergen, JFK, or West Side Ave so it's weird to have that one in particular called out.

Journal Square.

For places with more places to eat not just Indian, move anywhere other than Journal Square.

Someone just posted a video from their window of a man getting knocked out cold on Newark Avenue, and others have been posting videos of someone purposely crashing a car, aimed at people, into Taqueria, but yea, and on the daily people complain about cars speeding through Downtown cross walks, almost murdering them...but yea, Downtown is safe.

Journal Square is very safe and has been getting safer and safer. At night be a bit more conscious just like any urban area. It’s 10 to 15 minute walk from JSQ to Mcginley Square. More variety in terms of restaurants.

Okay well thanks for that. It seems so many people are triggered by the last sentence as I said it in a joking manor. People have preferences on what they like as food. The whole point I moved here was for cheap rent and that's always the first reason. Again not from around here, I started walked around and noticed that there are more Indian places to eat so was hoping of other recommendations. Again not from around here.

there’s better food down this way imo. if you’re not in a gang or selling drugs on the corner you’ll be fine. JC folks act like you’ll just be walking down the block in greenville and get attacked . let’s stop associating low income with criminality please its pretty wack
