This is a kinda petty question but I thought I’d ask anyway. I have a MetroCard with a current balance of $1.93. Through the machines you can only load balances in multiples of 5 cents so if I put an amount of let’s say $6.35 and used the card, that would bring to an eventual balance of $0.03. Is there anywhere in Jersey City I could load an amount such as $25.57 in cash on my MetroCard so I’ll eventually have a zero balance?

How did you manage to end up with $1.93 on the metrocard in the first place?

Why not use the smartlink card? You can load numbers of trips instead of a dollar amount

Try somewhere where there’s an agent in a booth selling. I can’t remember if anywhere in JC has them because I’ve never needed one, so you might have to do it in the city at a subway stop.

Yes this works. For one reason or another I ended up with 10 metro cards that had less than a fare’s balance. I added exactly as much as I need to get a single fare and it worked. Just choose “other amount” on the machine when it prompts you for how much money you would like to add

metrocard is made so MTA can make extra money off people on such tiny increments left on cards.

now round it up to the amount of metrocards and you can imagine how much money they make of this scheme.

You were able to get bonuses in the past. Mta got rid of it a few years back and many people still have weird balances. My card has a 0.02 balance if fully depleted.

Pro tip - always buy $22 or $44 when refilling so you don’t leave any balances
