I have had it both ways. One time I saw John Stewart at Target and the person I was with said, “look it’s John Stewart!”, as he was getting a shopping cart and I had the frame of mind to immediately say, “let’s leave him alone he’s shopping” and just as I said it he looked up and did the little Robert Redford head nod in appreciation. Another time I was walking down Jersey Ave and saw Stephanie March from Law & Order and she had some t-shirt with a logo on it I couldn’t make out, so I was basically staring at her breasts as she was coming towards me, and I looked up at the last minute and realized who she was and she says hello and I just go, “mmpheyadoin”.
