Hi! Currently looking for houses for rent- I’m looking at some in bird town is it safe there? I’ve heard that end of Lakewood isn’t the best. I’m currently living in Parma right now so nothing super boujee! Thanks

EDIT: STOP BRINGING UP RACE, I'M NOT ASKING ABOUT THAT OR EVEN INSINUATING THAT. I JUST WANT SOME INSIGHTS FROM CURRENT/ PREVIOUS RESIDENTS AND THEIR EXPERIENCE LIVING THERE AND OVERALL SAFETY.

If you’re in Parma now you’ll do just fine in bird town.

I personally wouldn't live in Birdtown

Something to consider. Lakewood wants their tax money.

If you live there but don't work there, they expect to be paid. I think it was 1,650 for me.

Figure that into your budget

I loved living in birdtown. One of the most walkable bits of town. If you lived in the city before you'll be fine. People talk about the east end of Lakewood like its skid row.

well, i have had people run up on me with guns for just standing on the corner multiple times.

"waiting for a friend" on the street corner and multiple different groups have accused me of trying to sell drugs on thier corner so like .yeah, it is pretty shit compared to the rest of lakewood.

ive also had a crack head crawl in my window while i was sitting in my living room.

we knew her and what not but like.

Yall really think anywhere in Lakewood is "dangerous"? Because of... Cleveland... Why don't yall just say what you mean? Bunch of gentrification condemning gentrifiers. This is what segregation looks like, dressed up in liberal good intentions. Yall backwards as fuck believing you're progressive. Just say you're afraid to live around black ppl.

How long ago was that? Pretty sure those hoops have been back up for around 2 years and there haven’t been any shootings. What about all the random bar shooting in Lakewood that seem to happen every other month. Should we close all the bars ? You’re probably just as classy as Lennon actually was.

That isn’t at all what I was asking. I’m not familiar with living in Lakewood only visiting from time to time. I want to know about an area i would be living in from people who have lived/ had experiences there. That’s a very ignorant thing to say i don’t know why you had to bring race into it. All people can be criminals. I’m wondering about break ins, car jackings etc. Happening all over these days.

I’ve never lived in Lakewood! Just visited from time to time and heard it wasn’t the best but that’s with any city all areas aren’t the nicest. I’m in parma right now, been living here most of my life.

I currently live in Birdtown. You can walk to everything on Madison. The park being so close is great. Your neighbors might be a little weird but, it’s a good neighborhood.

I think we got off on the wrong foot. Clearly, you are so much smarter than everyone else. I have acknowledged that, and I sit in awe of the brilliance you have been so magnanimous in imparting on me.

So please don't take my compliments on your intellect in any other way besides they are intended.

>Birdtown is safer than Ohio City, but not as safe as Rocky River.

That's a good way to calibrate it.
I live right on the Lakewood/Cleveland border, and there's definitely some sketchiness- car got broken into, got followed by a tinted out car once, a few shootings and drug deals nearby. But I'd still say it's rare to to see those things.
I still feel safe walking around at least Madison in Birdtown at night. It's a cute area with lots to do.

I grew up in Lakewood during the time they removed every basketball court we had. Lakewood park, Madison park, the cages at Harding, YMCA wasn’t built yet. They tore down literally any half court tiny hoop as well they could find. It greatly affected all of us who played and in fact we biked and bussed to way worse parts of other neighboring cities just to be able to play again. Half the time the hoop wasn’t even the right size. Still a little salty about all this to this day. Removing hoops is not the way to go.

“Is it safe there” - guy from Parma bro just look up the demographic information you really want to know you don’t have to mask it

el-ay-cee t1_je52utv wrote

When the shootings at Madison happened there were residents of Birdtown calling for an actual wall to keep "Cleveland" (read black people) out. "Segregation dressed up in liberal good intentions" is it.

−1

Aggressive_Ad_4406 OP t1_je53gug wrote

I'm not asking for a wall, theres definitely crime in every city residents or non residents, there's no stopping that. Just looking for some insight on people who are currently living / frequent the area and their experiences with the area. I don't go into Lakewood that often other than occasionally eating or shopping so i'm not familiar with the overall safety of living there.

Aggressive_Ad_4406 OP t1_je54730 wrote

Actually i'm a girl. Demographics don’t have anything to do with my question, just looking for insight of the safety of the city. I've gone on spot crime and websites like that to see about news, crime happening but insights from current residents is always more helpful than a website not everything gets reported.

There's been an increase in crime happening in Parma over the last few years( not why I’m moving out, there’s no places for rent that I like there available) so that is why I pointed out I live there, it's not like I live in some rich neighborhood and scared for my safety over everything little thing.

Are you looking for housemates for renting out extra rooms?

Aggressive_Ad_4406 OP t1_je581hm wrote

I said people from other cities? I never mentioned any race or specific cities, people commit crimes from all different cities in Parma and they’re all different races. I don’t know why things automatically go to race when someone asks about safety or crime.

I live in downtown lakewood in a store front, woke up to a drunk homeless man sleeping right infront on my apartment door in my hallway just a few weeks back. So these things happen everywhere. So my “nicer” side of lakewood has homeless people I see daily, drunks, and bad ass teenagers . So yeah all of lakewood has it problems .

This is what racism looks like here. The whole region is segregated on the same lines it has been for over a century. Bird town has been referred to as the ghetto of Lakewood since before I was born, but now people wanting to move into a progressive trendy area at lower prices put their eye on it, pushed the rents up so the original residents couldn't afford to live there any longer, and then complain about any degree of crime as if it's a pandemic. All the other comments to your post blame people from Cleveland for the crime. Know that that is what they mean. They mean black people, but won't say it. Closeted bigotry is what you can expect from your neighbors there. In reality, you're in no more danger there than anywhere else in Lakewood.

buttmartini t1_je6fg2l wrote

Birdtown is a lovely, walkable, historic neighborhood. There is no more crime there than any other part of Lakewood. You’ll love it. People love to act like Lakewood is not like 4 square miles. It’s not like things are dramatically different from one end of the city to the other

LogicalBottle9 t1_jea9ohm wrote

It's totally safe. I live in the area - more urban than parma but completely safe and more fun/walkable.

I grew up in birdtown and my mom still lives there. Like someone else said, she has bedbugs all the time and her landlord is not that Richard guy. I do not like going there at night and am glad I don’t live there anymore. But it’s not the worst place to live, it’s nice to have the park there and the factory in birdtown has lots of cool activities.
