It's not the least cool flag in America, but it's close. I always like the Arizona and New Mexico flags. Principles of flag making are kind of interesting if you want to go down a rabbit hole.

They used to say a flag should be simple enough a child could make it from memory. In the past, it was important to be able to see it hanging from the mast of a ship. The decision to include text on a flag is fraught. You'll have to be able to read it backwards 50% of the time. I personally like flags that are naturally occurring phenomenon. Like Alaska's astronomical flag, trees, fish, etc. Technically even the rainbow flag is a naturally occurring phenomenon.

How about just some cool shapes and colors? Flags with overly complex symbology on them are harder to incorporate into use in regular life. I feel like whenever I’m in Texas or Colorado or Ohio I see their flags worked into all sorts of stuff. Nobody does that in MA because in addition to being racist, the flag is ugly and overly complicated. I honestly hated it before I understood anything about its history or the meaning of the symbols.

That goes out the window when a country's flag only consists of horizontal or vertical stripes of the national colors. Even worse when national flags share the same colors but the order the stripes are in is different.

Stable Diffusion using `img2img` might do a better job here than DALLE, since you can give the AI an image prompt as well as a text prompt.

You could make a crummy collage in the gimp or krita (these are open source alternatives to Photoshop).

Well, too late? Regardless of what should or shouldn't be on a flag, people grow attachments to symbols, especially symbols that represent their home. I don't discount the problems with the flag that exist and why we're having the discussion, but I think the best solution to any possible flag redesign is the simplest.

When I think of Massachusetts, I think of the Revolutionary War, Abolitionism, Irish-Americans, immigration, and the winters. Designs that incorporate those symbols would probably be welcome.

Specifically, the rule of thumb is that what a child can draw by memory is recognizable, not necessarily completely accurate. That gives more room for creativity besides the endless tricolors and makes it clear that flags like mass’s current one doesn’t make the cut.

Few kids could draw the US flag well, but you’d know what you’re looking at right away when they try. Same with the Arizona flag.

The green pine on blue would be pretty good. But not on a shield. It's not really good flag design to have "background color, shield, thing on shield". That's one of the things we need to get away from with the current design.

But, that's the point. Having the seal on the flag is not the "simplest" design. There are other flag designs, and symbols, that are even older than the seal design, and would still connect to MA history rather than just being some random new thing.
