I assume most people expected this conclusion, it seems like population in a town has an inverse relationship with the number of gun owners (or at least the number permits issued).
A few days ago I found a big spreadsheet of the number of active permits for each town in MA. This got me thinking, which areas of MA have the highest gun ownership rate? So I pulled population data on each town, made the join between the two values and created the attached summary chart. You can access the raw data here if you're curious.
Some notable towns with very high ownership
MIDDLEFIELD | 42.08% |
---|---|
SAVOY | 36.74% |
PERU | 36.12% |
TOLLAND | 35.03% |
And some towns with very low ownership
BOSTON | 1.79% |
---|---|
AMHERST | 1.62% |
BROOKLINE | 1.25% |
CAMBRIDGE | 1.08% |

Edit: it’s about 7.5% state wide.
