My guess is the train operators have trouble stopping on time at the next station and go past (or overrun) the end of the platform. Hotspot is that this happens a lot at the next station.

It's doubly stupid because the DC Metro (where this photo was taken) was designed for automated operation, but the entire system has been driven manually since 2009. Why? A bad 2009 train collision was thought to have been caused by the train control system. Federal investigators later determined the problem was with bad equipment, not the control system, but they've kept the automation disabled anyways.

I agree, I would be concerned if I saw that sign. I don't live somewhere with trains so I use them only on vacations.

it’s not for you it’s for the conductor. it’s a reminder for the conductor not to haul so much ass they can’t stop in the right spot at the next station.
