It means they ran out of branded keys. Branded keys costs more but are typically brand standard. Most hotels keep a few boxes of these around for BOH or in case they run out.

Wow really? I have stayed in a bunch of hotels over the years, just surprised I have never seen this. But that does make sense.

This is almost certainly it. I've worked in quite a few hotels and thankfully only once had to break out the emergency box.

I stayed at this same hotel about a month ago and they had normal Best Western keys. So them running out is probably what is going on.
