I watched 2001: A Space Odyssey for the first time a while ago. There's this one scene in the dawn of man sequence that features 2 second long footage of Tapirs falling. I didn't think much of it then, but after watching it again today, I noticed just how hard they fell. One of them looks like they broke their legs. I did some research, but never really found anything. Is there anyone here that knows the definitive answer? I love Kubrick's movies, but that just doesn't sit right with me.

There have been regulations in place since 1939 about harming animals on film.

The tapirs were on loan from a UK zoo, and from what I can find online, they were returned unharmed.

They may have used props for the scene.

Ok, thank you! It looked so realistic, that I wasn't too sure.

A couple of robots suffered panic attacks during the course of the movie. They really thought they were in space.

I heard that. Truly unfortunate what happened to them after filming.
