The reason he was killing the other hitmen was because he wanted to get the bounty $$, but it wasn't enough at first. The situation with the dog, in my opinion, was to make you feel emotions for it. That way, you can connect this to the entire reason why Wick got back into it, thus leading us to the scene with John and the dog.

Why he was the only one assassins who was killing everybody else. There haven't been another assassins like him in 4 movies
