A lot of movies, like The Thing (1982), were written off by critics and audiences at the time, but were later re-evaluated, or at least found a cult audience.

But what about movies that were reviewed well, but were re-evaluated so significantly that this is almost forgotten? For some reason, the year 2005 has more than one example.

King Kong (2005) was released to critical acclaim, and did respectably at the box office. It holds an 81 Metascore and an 84% on Rotten Tomatoes. But these days, the common consensus seems to be that it is self-indulgent and overlong.

Even more dramatically, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (2005) has a 72 Metascore and an 83% on Rotten Tomatoes. It was the sixth highest-grossing film of the year, beating Batman Begins, Madagascar, and King Kong. The movie clearly had an audience. But ask anyone nowadays, and they’ll tell you they strongly dislike it, and more than that, always disliked it.

What are some other examples, and what happened with movies like this? Were they always polarizing, with critics seeing something that audiences never did? Or did they succumb to narratives on social media and reevaluations from new audiences who never saw them in theaters?
