In 2003, when I was 9 years old, I went to the cinema to see “Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King”, a really great film. I’ll never forget, before the movie started, one of the previews they showed was this creepy teaser trailer for “Son of the Mask” https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=q4HyI0i1mPM

Despite the fact that I found the CGI baby unsettling, I was overwhelmed with excitement by the prospect of a sequel to “The Mask”, a film I fell in love with when I was 4 and thought Jim Carrey was God’s gift to cinema.

In the years leading to its release in 2005, I distinctly remember scouring the internet for any info I could find: plot, posters, cast, production photos, everything. I was stoked.

Fast forward to 2006. I’m sitting in my bedroom, watching the Starz channel, and “Son of the Mask” comes on. I decided to watch it, of course, and for the rest of my life I have to live with the consequences of my decision.

It was the biggest piece of shit I’d ever seen. It was stupid, annoying, unfunny, badly written, horribly acted, the special effects were abysmal, it was downright terrifying at times, and Bob Hoskins—BOB FUCKING HOSKINS—had an embarrassing cameo as Odin the All-Father.

It was the first time I can remember really hating a movie on a visceral level.
