Shout-out to Mia Goth getting the nomination for Pearl. I still don't think she has a shot at Oscar recognition but she absolutely deserves it. My favorite performance of the year

No gender categories suck.

Instead of 4 winners in each acting category, we get only 2. How does this help anybody? this is not inclusivity, this is just dumb

Honestly this award season is a toss up between EVERYTHING EVERYWHERE and THE FABELMANS. I can absolutely see EVERYTHING EVERYWHERE taking Best Picture on Oscar night.

I think its crazy how this movie came out early 2022 and we are still talking about it. A true masterpiece

Having watched both TAR and EEAAO, I can say Michelle Yeoh gave the best performanceof the year, hands down, in the lead actress category. As much as I love Cate Blanchett in TAR, I don’t think she is astronomically better than her competition and Yeoh’s performance resonated with me in a way that Blanchett’s never did. I’d be so pumped if Yeoh won the Oscar.

I saw crazy hype from everywhere about this movie. Literally everyone was telling me how amazing it was… I finally watched it last night, and I think it was just okay. I didn’t hate it. It was entertaining, but almost a bit too weird.

It felt like a direct spoof of Inception, and The Matrix combined.

Sorry if you’re one of the many who thinks it’s the best movie ever made, I just strongly disagree. Again don’t get me wrong I enjoyed watching it. I found many scenes very funny, then others felt like they were trying too hard. Butt plugs come to mind lol.

The one I’m really hoping for is Ke Huy Quan getting an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor. Man was absolutely unbelievable, the best performance in a movie already packed with incredible performances, and I can completely see him losing to Tom Hanks’ shitty Elvis performance or something

Celestin_Sky t1_ixdxlal wrote

The problem with acting is the number of potential winners. You have usually one director, one screenwriter, one composer and others for a movie and two or more leads and dozens of support making it a lot harder to get an award.

But dividing it based on whatever someone is female or male doesn't feel right. Having two award for leads and two for support with no distinction doesn't work. There is probably simply no good solution. Personally I would simply leave it as it was saying it's tradition and it's allows to double the awards instead of removing it.

thewidowgorey t1_ixdxsve wrote

I loved Tár, but Cate Blanchett’s won the Oscar twice already and these shows are all about the game, so Michelle better win. She was incredible as Evelyn. EEAAO still makes me cry and I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve watched it.

MacklinYouSOB t1_ixe25oq wrote

I am the only other person on the internet who thinks the movie was good but not amazing. I’d give it an 8/10, glad I saw it but won’t be rushing to rewatch or hyping it up to other people beyond saying it was good

It was a very Reddit demographic movie. It does some cool things and despite being the millionth multiverse movies it does some cool things with it. But damn is it hard to get through without cringing at the attempts at humor.

I think nominations are all but guaranteed at this point. Don't know if it'll win but it's definitely getting in. My predictions are nominations for Yeoh, Curtis and Quan and Best Picture, but I think Picture will be it's win out of all of them.

Adding a featured actress/actor category makes sense for me. Someone who is only featured in a few scenes.

The supporting acting category is often hacked by having performances that are basically 2nd leads (Christoph Waltz in Django Unchained, Catherine Zeta-Jones in Chicago ect) which truly is unfair to compete against a scene-stealing featured performance.

Judd Hirsch is shockingly strong and despite the fact that he's only in one scene in The Fablemans, could end up rallying the older subsect of the actors branch who apparently aren't appreciating the film at Academy screenings so far (though it should be noted that the overall reception at these screenings seems to be enthusiastically positive). Variety currently has Hirsch pulling an upset, though most places and current betting odds have Quan winning easily.

The Oscar’s have actually not really recognized Tom in like the last 20 years. He ‘finally’ got recognized for his portrayal of Mr Rogers but that was after at least 3-4 roles he was in the conversation for in the last ten years and didn’t get in for.

I watched it in theatres too. It just didn't hit me at all. It got too goofy and I couldn't take the movie seriously. But then I also don't like comedies, and this movie delved too deep into the comedy genre for my taste.

10

Listen-bitch t1_ixfldsu wrote

I thought it was a solid 6/10. Too goofy, too random and the main plot was too lame. It was trying too hard for me to care about the daughter who I absolutely did not care for. I was way more invested in the mom's and dad's plot but they kind of forget about them half way through when it suddenly became all about the kid.

thisguy012 t1_ixfnn3k wrote

Reddit demographics is a lanky white dude in his 20s lol

This movie hits hard if you're a minority and 1st gen.

The multiverse thing is nothing but a far far back drop to the real meat which is the daughter's relationship with her mom.

If I was going to compare this to something it would be Lady bird not Dr. Strange lmfao

And compared to Ladybird it's 10x better w/o a doubt.

Both GoldDerby and Variety predict that Quan will win. Hanks is 11th on one and 24th on the other so he is unlikely to be nominated and has absolutely no chance to win. The winner will definitely be either Quan or Gleeson.

It’s a movie that really is stunning on the big screen. I also think it’s important to watch it without taking a break. The sequences of images and verse jumping did something chemically to my mind to make my brain feel very altered, in a way that left me feeling profoundly changed for better. If you’re watching it in tv and getting up to get a drink and go pee and let the dog in you break up the stream of consciousness and you don’t get to that place.

I think it's a great 90-100 minute film that was kind of exhausting at over 2 hours. If you showed me any random sequence, I'd love it, but sitting through it at the cinema, I found it just too much.
