How this will turn out surprised me. The incredible Cumberbatch. Son is amazing at his little age. I'm astonished!

Loved it. Gorgeous cinematography, Dunst is not mentioned enough, she did great. One of Campion’s best piece.

I am not ashamed to admit I had to read the wikipedia to truly understand what happened. Amazing film wonderfully acheived on all categories.

I absolutely loved it, it’s a brilliant movie. As a closeted queer I understood what was going on with Cumberbatch’s character in about five minutes but that didn’t lessen my enjoyment one bit; in fact it became more fascinating.

The first time I tried to watch it, I lost interest at around the 30 minute mark and didn't come back to it for like 6 months. I have to speak of the movie in it's first and second half, the mid point being when Cumberbatch starts working on the lasso. I think the first half of the movie is glacially paced and boring, and I think the second half is some of the best filmmaking I've ever seen. Ultimately not sure what I would rate this movie because the two halves are at such different levels of quality in my opinion. If they could have cut like 20 minutes out of the first half of the movie, I'd probably have nothing negative to say about it.

The movie was basically Brokeback Mountain about 15 years after Brokeback Mountain. I didn't get the hype for this movie, considering Brokeback explored the same themes in literally the same setting, with a better story and actors.

Great movie, deserved its best picture nomination for sure.

I was unsure about the movie in the early stages but the more I watched the more it hooked me. I ended up really enjoying it. Was the only Oscar contender from last year that still had me thinking about it the next day.

Well worth the acclaim it received during awards season last year.

I got bored and stopped after like a full hour in. It's pretty rare I stop any movie.

Great movie. I was shocked this didn't win Best Picture. I was really glad I saw this in the theater.

I thought his performance was fantastic acting-wise, but I'm so used to seeing him play posh British people that it was somewhat jarring to see him in a role like this at first.

To elaborate a little on my earlier opinion, I think the story required an actor who can (a) do a convincing American accent, and (b) present somewhat convincingly as a paragon of gruff masculinity. In my opinion — and it appears I’m in a minority — Cumberbatch can do neither. He exudes weirdness and alienness no matter how much dirt and grime you cover with him.

Generally, I like Cumberbatch. More often than not, I like his work. I just think he was a bad fit for this role. Verbally, the accent is distractingly bad. In terms of the general vibes he gives off, he’s too peculiar and otherworldly. That works brilliantly for him in other roles (Sherlock, Imitation Game, etc.), but not this one. The twist would work better with an actor who doesn’t give off those off-kilter vibes from the moment you see him. Again, just my opinion. Few, it seems, agree!

As for finding the film slow and dull, I will say that I’ve seen it only once, and perhaps I wasn’t in the right mood. FWIW, I remember thinking the same about The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford (2007) when I first saw it. I re-watched it earlier this year, and now I’ll tell anyone who cares to listen that it’s one of the best American films of the last 20 years. Perhaps Dog will 'improve' on subsequent viewings in a similar way. Both films have a similar vibe.
