Requiem for a Dream?

I watch a lot of movies and I’m usually able to take most psychological or horror thrillers. I have however failed to bring myself to watch Requiem for a Dream even though I’ve had it on my list for years. I majored in film in college and have watched my fair share of gory movie. Every single time I’m about to watch it I see a scary ass review and I’m like maybe I’m not ready for this. For those of you who have watched it, what was your experience? Would you recommend it to someone who is scared easily? Is it horror? What’s the genre anyway
