The first movie I ever watched that had an ambiguous ending and left you hanging was Inception! I remember my jaw just dropping in the theater when the top just barely wobbles and then it cuts. I had to go back the next day and watch it again.
I believe that the top topples. I read somewhere that Cobb’s actual totem was his wedding ring (since he said that the top was actually Mal’s totem). In the final scene he wasn’t wearing the ring, ergo he was in reality.

A cliffhanger ending should be where the film stops before resolving its storyline, possibly in the middle of an action scene, leaving you to wonder what will happen next.
