Sometimes it just happens that a movie you like very much doesn't impress very many other people. The general consensus of those who consider movies for awards and awards discussions seems to be that it didn't have a great blend of humor and romance, and didn't tell a very compelling story.

It had nothing to do with timing. It had a lot to do with being overhyped, and then hate-hyped. The director first wanted us to believe he had invented the gay romcom, and then wanted us to believe we were homophobes if we questioned his judgement. It's hard to like a mediocre film after that kind of thing.
